Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, is one of the most important and widely cultivated spice crops in India. India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of turmeric, contributing around 75–80% of global production. It is mainly cultivated in tropical climates with hot and humid conditions, and the crop is typically planted from May to July and harvested between January and March. Turmeric grows best in well-drained loamy or alluvial soils rich in organic matter. Farmers use rhizomes as the planting material, and the crop requires consistent irrigation and fertilization, especially in non-rain-fed areas. After about 7–9 months, when the leaves begin to yellow, the crop is harvested, boiled, dried, and polished for market or export.
